Veterinary Physical Rehabilitation...
...utilizes non-invasive therapies to improve physical strength, cardiovascular endurance, and orthopedic and neurological function. Conditions that can benefit from veterinary physical rehabilitation include:
Postoperative orthopedic surgeries
Cranial cruciate ligament injury
Intervertebral disc disease
Paralysis
Degenerative myelopathy
Osteoarthritis
Senior and aging pets
Weight loss
Conditioning for agility, performance and working dogs
Available Therapies:
Therapeutic Exercises:
Range of motion, aerobic conditioning, gait training, muscle strengthening, balance, coordination, posture and motor control.
Manual Therapy:
Massage and stretching
Underwater Treadmill: Water therapy is a very useful component of veterinary physical rehabilitation. An underwater treadmill utilizes the warmth, buoyancy and resistance of water to help a patient achieve a relatively normal gait. An underwater treadmill differs from swimming because it allows an animal to move in a natural walking pattern. This is very important for patients that are recovering from orthopedic surgery, have arthritis or some neurological conditions. An underwater treadmill can also provide muscle and cardiovascular strengthening for aging patients as well as conditioning for agility, performance and working dogs.
Therapeutic Laser: Therapeutic lasers have become very popular and important in veterinary medicine and physical rehabilitation. A very common question is “How does the laser work?”. Well, it’s all physics! Therapeutic lasers use a specific wavelength of collimated light to penetrate through the skin and into the surrounding tissues. The light energy then excites the molecules and cells around the blood vessels to induce vasodilation. The opening of the blood vessels and surrounding veins and lymphatics helps move inflammation and swelling out and healing factors into the affected tissues. This is valuable for treating acute injuries and chronic conditions of the muscles, ligaments and bones. The therapeutic laser can also aid with wound healing including conditions such as post-surgical wounds, burns, open or non-healing wounds, and lick granulomas.
Assisi Loop tPEMF (targeted pulsed electromagnetic field technology): The Assisi Loop is an FDA approved device that uses pulsed electromagnetic field technology to aid with reducing inflammation and improve healing within the body. The Assisi Loop can be used for many conditions including post-surgical healing, including areas with metal plates, osteoarthritis, acute trauma, musculoskeletal injuries, neurological diseases including intervertebral disc disease, Chiari like malformation and syringomyelia, lick granulomas, and any area of inflammation. It is safe to use the Assisi loop near or around infected areas and cancer. These are available for purchase at our Centerville office.
Harness Fitting: A well-fit harness can significantly change the quality of life for you and your pet who needs assistance with walking. The Help-Em Up Harness is designed to assist pets that have had orthopedic surgery, injury, or weakness and need assistance with walking, going up steps, and getting into and out of the car. It is washable, durable, and designed to have the ability to be used continuously for your pet. These are available for purchase at our Centerville office.
Cart and Wheelchair: Carts and wheelchairs are designed to aid pets that have lost neurological or musculoskeletal function and mobility of the legs. Rear end carts, front end carts, and quad carts are available for paraparetic, paraplegic, or quadraplegic patients. Many pets can regain a sense of normalcy as the carts and wheelchairs provide physical and mechanical support. Most carts are custom made.
Orthotic Brace Casting and Fitting: Orthotic devices are custom made pieces that can be applied on limbs to assist or limit joint mobility. Orthotics can aid with many orthopedic issues such as limb deformities, nonunion fractures, neurological deficiencies that prevent normal movement of the lower limbs (ex brachial plexus avulsion, sciatic neuropathy, degenerative myelopathy).
